cervical cancer

9 years ago | 7856 Views
Cervical cancer is a cancer arising from the cervix, imvukuzane yomlomo wesibeletho. It is due to the abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Early on there are typically no symptoms. Later symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or pain during sexual intercourse. While bleeding after sex may not be serious, it may also indicate the presence of cervical cancer.

in 90 % of cases it is due to an infection called HPV, human papillomavirus. Diagnosis of this cancer is by serial cervical screening and biopsy. Screening is done by pap smear, which takes cells from the cervix to see if they are abnormal or not, if they are a biopsy is done which confirms the cancer.

what you need to do is to have a pap smear done after atleast 3 years after the first sexual encounter. then after that, it depends on the outcome of the first pap smear.

if you HIV negative, you need to repeat the test every 3 years. If you positive, you need to have the pap smear done every year since the cancer progresses faster if you immunosuppressed.

for this week i will keep on posting about cervical cancer, and you can post your questions on the areas that you need to be explainly, in our language if possible!
